Solar Shift, an interactive light installation powered by clean energy

Solar Shift, designed by PROJECTiONE LLC, is a proposal for an outdoor art installation at the new Evansville Arena in the state of Indiana. Thanks to motion sensors, the twisting, high-tech canopy will activate its LED lighting in response to people’s movement. The design is meant to define the public outdoor space as an extension of the progressive building and encourage interaction between visitors and the public environment.

This intriguing piece of artwork also functions as a solar collector. Its shape is the result of careful analysis of Evansville’s sun path data, ensuring that the photovoltaic panels receive maximum solar radiation between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The design was then modified to improve access, accommodate walkways and provide a pleasant visual appearance.
As a closed system, the panels are neither interconnected nor hooked up to the grid. Each element functions separately, collecting solar energy during the day to power its lights in the evening when visitors are present. The designers developed this concept based on the idea that projects that react to users tend to elicit a stronger emotional response.
