Fuksas Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport

The new terminal designed by architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas for Shenzhen International Airport, opened on November 28 2013, is shaped like a manta ray. It is the first airport project by the Italian architects, who were appointed to design it after winning an international competition in 2008.

The structure is 1.5 km long and 80 m high, covered with a double honeycomb skin that lets daylight filter through, creating dynamic effects as the light refracts at different angles.
The interior is all white, designed as an elegant, fluid space integrating the concepts of movement and rest. The pillars of the structure become white stylised trees, in which the secondary branches are ventilation openings for the air conditioning system.
The check-in and passport control areas have stainless steel finishes reflecting the honeycomb skin of the ceiling.
