Chevalier Morales’ Residence de l'Isle: a perfect square

Residence de l'Isle is a reworking of modern American mid-twentieth-century homes, designed by Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales for a well-to-do couple with two children. The house stands on the bank of a river, and, in redesigning a structure dating back to seventy years ago, Chevalier and Morales maintained the building’s initial ecological footprint while replenishing the vegetation around it. The design of the home was based on a rational process which began with the square volume and sculpted out the spaces in response to the aesthetic, functional and structural requirements suggested by the project.

Four new floors were built to double the space available and obtain an 8-story residential tower. In addition, a so-called Climate Skin was added, a special 3D envelope that envelops the building and, just like human skin, helps regulate the temperature of the interior spaces.
