Untouched Since 2006, Robert Szutta has worked from his Vienna-based studio Farbantrieb (driver of colour) together with his partner Fabian Morak. Szutta's work as a professional photographer is extremely varied and he actually divides it into two stylistic lines: “retouched”, combining his love for detail with computer generated imagery (CGI) postproduction, and “untouched”, sharing with us some of these shots.
As the title of so clearly says, his study of the image is offered up with no retouching, exactly how his photographer's eye saw it and captured it at that specific moment in time.
Indeed, the recurring theme of these photographs is the slightly edgy aesthetic of what at first sight doesn't appear to be beautiful, or simply not considered such.
An example of this is the “Geschlossen” (closed) series where you can see boarded up shops, abandoned places no longer in use but still part of the urban fabric - mute testimonies to a not very distant past when you could buy everything you needed locally. Or the portraits of the dark, natural landscape in November, when you can really feel the onset of cold, humid weather, to move your eyes to the Südbahn stations in Vienna where the patterns and original materials of the site become the leitmotif of the visual narration.
The fact that Robert Szutta's photos are genuine and untouched gives them a communicative power that directly touches the observer. They seem to say: look, this is the real world, this is what it's all about, and even without the miracles of digital postproduction, you can see small marvels, because all you need to do is open your eyes and know how to seize the moment.
