Frank Gehry’s New World Centre opens
The primary concern of the New World Symphony’s Orchestral Academy, founded by Michael Tilson Thomas, is music education, meaning teaching, performance and experimentation with music. In pursuit of these aims architect Frank Gehry was commissioned to build the New World Centre, recently opened. On the outside the building looks like a regular volume, a rectangle in which internal tensions seem to have been tamed so that they are visible only on the main facade, made entirely out of glass. The activities in progress inside the building are visible from the outside through this large transparent screen, inviting passersby to come in. Next to the building is the Miami Beach SoundScape, designed by the Dutch studio West 8, a big park where the New World Symphony will hold some of its events. The client’s intention was that the building and the park should together form a new centre for culture, recreation and tourism in the city.
